O'Hara Nature Center Opens In Irvington

IRVINGTON, N.Y. – The new O'Hara Nature Center officially opened Saturday after a decade of development, and Irvington residents and officials were on hand to celebrate.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was followed by guided tours and hikes on the Peter Oley Trailways. The new nature center is on Mountain Road in Irvington and connects to the Irvington Woods.

The center's site was donated to the village in 2002, and officials began planning for a nature center, Irvington Mayor Brian Smith noted in an email.

Funds from Westchester County, Scenic Hudson, the Open Space Institute and a resident-approved open space bond helped add 25 acres to the site, Smith said. The village also used a $239,000 construction grant and a $60,000 donation from the O'Hara Foundation.

“The great message of the O’Hara Nature Center is that it has taken the efforts of many, many people to get it built,” Smith said.
