GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- State Police are investigating a fatal head-on collision involving a wrong-way driver that occurred in the early morning hours Friday on the Sprain Brook Parkway in Greenburgh.

Paul E. Duncan, 46, of Hartsdale, was killed in the crash, according to state police. Duncan, who was driving a 2011 Honda Pilot, was an off-duty NYPD detective, according to police. He was a Detective 1st Grade, assigned to their Internal Affairs Bureau, police said.

Efren Moreano, 20, of Yonkers was identified as driving northbound in the southbound lanes, according to police. He is in stable condition at Westchester Medical Center.

Alcohol and marijuana may have been factors in the crash, according to a report by WCBS.

Duncan's wife, Rechelle, said she was delayed in the traffic that followed the crash while driving her daughter to school, unaware her husband was involved, according to WABC.

The Hudson Valley Transportation Management Center received a report of a wrong-way driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the Sprain Brook Parkway at approximately 3:52 a.m., police said.

A trooper located a collision just south of Route 100B 3:57 a.m. that appeared to be the result of a wrong-way driver.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2013 Honda Civic was traveling northbound in the southbound lane before striking a 2011 Honda Pilot head-on, according to police.

The operator of the 2011 Pilot was killed as a result of the crash.

The operator of the Civic was transported to Westchester County Medical Center where he was initially placed in a medically induced coma, police said.
