New York Ranks Near Top Of Nation In Green Survey

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- New York State is one of the "greenest" states in the nation, according to a new study conducted by the Masters of Public Health Online.

The Empire State ranked sixth overall in the study that measured a state's environmental impact from public transportation, renewable energy, recycling, water quality, air quality and carbon-dioxide emissions.

New York ranked near the top of the country in gas consumption (second), percentage of waste recycled (sixth) and renewable energy (sixth). The state was towards the middle of the pack in water quality (21st) and environmental impact from public transportation (26th).

The state's lowest ranking was in carbon-dioxide emissions, in which it ranked 43rd.

According to the study, Kansas is considered the greenest state in the nation thanks in part to its runaway first-place finish in renewable energy. According to the study, Kansas uses 911,444 billion BTUs of renewable energy, compared to New York's 407,678 billion BTUs.

Delaware led the nation in gas consumption and carbon-dioxide emissions, California led in recycling and Alaska led in water quality. Washington, D.C., has the greenest public transportation system in the nation and has the best air quality.
