The following is the second in a series of introductions to new teachers and administrators in the Union Free School District of the Tarrytowns. For the full series, see our New Faces at TUFSD page.
SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. Carol Quinones-Smith loves middle school, which isn't surprising given her role as Sleepy Hollow Middle School's new assistant principal.
I just love the energy of the students, she said. I love the dynamics of this age. It's a very tender age, but a lot of things happen here too at this age developmentally, so it's rewarding and it's fun and it's challenging and it's exciting.
Quinones-Smith lives in Yorktown with her two sons, aged 14 and 11. She joked that her sons have trained me well for this position.
Quinones-Smith previously taught in White Plains. After more than a decade in the classroom, she decided it was time to grow professionally and went back to school. After graduating, she wanted to work in a very diverse and progressive community like the Tarrytowns School District.
I'm very happy to be here, she said.
Quinones-Smith got her start in education at the age of 14, when she worked in a Headstart program. She said she's always enjoyed working with children. The most satisfying job, Quinones-Smith said, is when you can make an impact and see the effects right in front of you.
Quinones-Smith has several goals for this year, one of which is to build relationships with students, parents, faculty and the community.
I also look forward to working closely with teachers to build on their instructional practices and align them with the common core state standards now that are in place, she said. And just really working and getting to know the instructional practices here and just move the district forward.
