Town Engineer David Smyth is drafting conceptual plans that would improve drainage, sidewalks and curbing and beautify Commerce Street at Elwood Avenue all the way northeast to four corners.

“If we clean up the roadway parking area and add curbing, sidewalk, tree plantings and lighting it may entice business owners to follow suit and dress up their buildings, which will in turn bring more business into our community,” Fulgenzi told Daily Voice.

Fulgenzi said the project is in the “infancy” stages and that the town is looking into applying for grants to fund the work. The town will also partner with the Thornwood-Hawthorne Chamber of Commerce, who will be able to apply for grants the municipality isn’t eligible for.

“This is something we have a big interest in,” said Fulgenzi of the Town Board. “I’ve wanted to do this for a long time and the board is interested so we are going to pursue this.”

Westchester County Legislator Michael Smith is also working on getting the county to make safety improvements to the roadway near Commerce Street and Elwood Avenue, according to Fulgenzi.

A 47-year-old man was killed in February 2013 after being hit by a car while walking on Commerce.

“The county has some plans in that corridor and we’re hoping to work with them on something to address that whole area,” said Fulgenzi.

“There’s a dire need for sidewalks in that area that create a safer walking environment near the train station. We want to make it a safer and more pleasant sight in that whole area.”

Fulgenzi said he would also like to work with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to get rid of the chain link fence and install a wrought iron fence along Commerce Street near the train station
