A new state law went into effect on Sunday, banning anyone under the age of 18 from playing Bingo.

The New York State Gaming Commission says the law was changed in an effort to bring Bingo’s minimum age in line with other forms of legal gambling, according to WHEC-TV. The change comes in a statewide effort to raise the age to that of legal gambling or lottery games.

Minors under the age of 18 will still be permitted in Bingo halls, but cannot participate in the game. Previously, there was no age limit, allowing children to play as long as they were accompanied by an adult.

A separate component of the law also raises the maximum Bingo prize from $1,000 to $5,000, in an effort to help organizations hosting Bingo events raise money, according to New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
