SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. — Sleepy Hollow Mayor Ken Wray is delighted with the sale of the former General Motors property, which he announced to the community on Dec. 23.

"It feels good quite frankly moving forward from the industrial past. It feels great to have General Motors in our rearview mirror," said Wray.

The land that was owned by General Motors has been vacant since late summer of 1996.

The 96-acre property will contain residential units, retail stores, 140-room hotel and a waterfront park. The residents will also have transportation to take them to and from the train station which will alleviate any additional traffic concerns during rush hours.

What kind of affect will this have on residents and businesses in both Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown?

Sleepy Hollow resident Mackenzie Dawson was thrilled about this news.

"It's a big piece of land to stay empty in such a small town," she said. "I'm excited about the plans for development, and think it's great that it will include so many different uses for the land - residences, a hotel, and shops.

"Sleepy Hollow is a wonderful place to live, but I think this development will only add to it, giving residents even more of a reason to spend their money locally (not to mention an added tax base!)."

Businesses are happy that the former GM property has been sold and that there will be new developments on the land.

"Many hotels and restaurants have come in the picture over the past 10 years within a 10-mile radius," said Gilbert Baeriswil, General Manager of Castle Hotel and Spa in nearby Tarrytown. "As long as we don’t drive corporations and other small business out of the areas and make it a business friendly county, everyone will be fine. It is more about staying the course and continue to develop great relationship with hotel guests and clients that make a business successful."

With more residents in Sleepy Hollow, following the development of the former GM property this will mean that there would be a possibility of more residents using facilities at Phelps Memorial Hospital Center.

“Phelps Memorial Hospital Center is always prepared to provide quality services to the community, and we will welcome the opportunity to serve the healthcare needs of the families who will reside in the new residences at Lighthouse Landing,” says Daniel Blum, Phelps' president and CEO.
