Longtime Sleepy Hollow Resident John Munroe Dies

On July 27, 2011, John M. Munroe of Sleepy Hollow died in West Hartford, CT.

Born in Missouri to Robert Munroe and Ruth Darden in 1914, he married Maxine Murphy of Buffalo NY in 1940. They had three children — John, Patrick, and Madalyn. There are seven grandchildren and seven great-grand children.

"B.J." and Max moved from Chicago to Sleepy Hollow in 1944. For over sixty years after that, he devoted much of his time to St. Teresa's Parish. He loved classical music and reading. Their apartment in the Van Tassel was a library of thousands of books. Family, relatives and friends cherish the ones he would always give them, always inscribed. On the hand press he got as a teenager, he printed stationery for them.

Children on Beekman Avenue called him the "Garbage Man" for picking up litter and carrying it to the nearest trash can, even when he began to walk with a cane.Mass on Wednesday, August 3, at 10 a.m., St. Teresa's Church.
