Long Lines, Gas Shortages Seen Around Tarrytown

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Kenny Thomas, a gas attendant at the Shell service station in the Bridge Plaza shopping center, said he was amazed at the long lines to get gas Thursday morning.

Cars stretched around the station and into the shopping center's parking lot as motorists waited to fill up their tanks.

“I haven't seen anything like this,” he said.

Cars were backing up streets on Route 9 near Route 119 in Tarrytown Thursday morning as motorists realized they'd better get gas before it ran out.

Several gas stations in Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow and Irvington are out of commission after Hurricane Sandy because of power outages and empty gas tanks, but a few were still selling fuel for those who were patiently waiting.

Residents were filling up their cars, as well as gas containers for generators.

The Hess gas station and the Shell gas station at Route 9 and 119 were selling gas. So was the Mobil gas station on North Broadway in Sleepy Hollow. The Shell gas station in Irvington and the BP, Sunoco, Citgo and Getty gas stations in Sleepy Hollow were not.

Thomas said his station had received about 10,000 gallons of gas for each underground tank on Tuesday. By Thursday morning he was down to about 800 gallons in each tank and heard that oil refineries in New Jersey were out of commission.

Thomas said he wasn't sure when to expect more. “Maybe Saturday,” he said.
