Sleepy Hollow Gearing Up For March Elections

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Residents who want to run in the upcoming March elections have some work to do before their name can appear on the ballot.

Village elections in Tarrytown, Irvington and Sleepy Hollow will take place on March 20. Several village trustee positions will be up for election, including three in Tarrytown, two in Irvington and three in Sleepy Hollow.

Irvington will also elect a village justice to a four-year term.

There are several ways to get a candidates' name on the ballot under the party-election system, Tarrytown Village Clerk Carol Booth said.

“The Chairperson of the Democrats and Republicans hold a caucus and their respective parties nominate candidates,” she said. Candidates “may also run on an independent body and then would have to file an independent nominating petition.”

Political parties must hold caucuses to put candidates on a ballot by Jan. 31. Independent candidates must file nominating petitions in the village clerk's office by Feb. 14, Booth said. Write-in candidates are also allowed.

Irvington Village Clerk-Treasurer Brenda Jeselnik noted that party chairs are responsible for making sure candidates follow the requirements to get on the ballot.

Tarrytown trustees Thomas Basher, Robert Hoyt and Mary McGee's terms will be expiring this year, as will Irvington trustees Rocco Rasulo and Walter Montgomery. In Sleepy Hollow, Tom Capossela, Karin Wompa and David Schroedel's terms will expire.

No mayoral elections will take place during the March elections.
