Letter: Tappan Zee Bridge is Bomb Dropped on Quay

Sol Stein is a Tarrytown resident who lives in the Quay Condominiums, a complex that sits just north of the Tappan Zee Bridge.

Dear Governor Cuomo,

Project Director Michael Anderson is beginning work on the new Tappan Zee Bridge that will have the impact of a huge military bomb dropped on my home and my work.

Governor Cuomo, you have declared war on the elderly who live where you plan to drop your bomb, scattering people who are trying to survive the Albany War against the innocent people of The Quay in Tarrytown who paid hard-earned money for a chance to live and work at home in a beautiful area that is now scheduled for destruction by your order. Why are you hurting so many people who over the years thought they were buying a home in a PROTECTED area? I’m 85 years old, and my life is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World . I have known and worked with public officials of high standing but have never come across one who would knowingly generate misery for so many of my neighbors on the Quay in Tarrytown.

Governor Cuomo, you have not put on the table when and how you plan to repay the seniors and their children and grandchildren who have committed no crime but will be in danger of losing their hearing as a result of the excruciatingly painful sound of pile driving over a course of years. I am partially deaf and may lose the rest of my hearing. I cannot continue my work as a writer with the noise of pile drivers. As it is, the air here has been condemned and your action will make it worse for many citizens of The Quay to breathe the already unhealthy and eventually lethal air. We are your southern neighbors and don’t understand why you’re doing this to us.  I suggest you take the time to visit us in Tarrytown. The money paid to officials is citizen money that should be denied use for harmful purposes, especially for seniors who must work at home close to the bridge-building work area.  Do you want to be remembered in history as the man who brought such misery to the Quay in Tarrytown?

A STOP WORK ORDER IS NEEDED for the preparation to build the bridge and paths for work trucks without the approval of the men, women, and children who will lose the use of their hard-earned homes as soon as that work begins.

Sincerely,

Sol SteinTarrytown, N.Y.
