IRVINGTON, N.Y. There wont be fireworks in Irvington this Fourth of Julyat least not for the entire village. The Village of Irvington announced last week that it would not be putting on a fireworks display.
In fact, fireworks were removed from the villages budget in 2009-10, according to village administrator Lawrence Schopfer.
In the last 2 years, an effort was made by certain passionate people to raise money for the fireworks and they were successful, Schopfer said. This year, no such effort was made that Im aware of. So there will not be fireworks this year.
To put on a fireworks display, the village would spend $25,000 to $30,000 each year. That figure includes the fireworks, overtime and other labor costs.
In its announcement, Irvington recommended that those wishing to see fireworks attend the Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow fireworks display.
The Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow fireworks display will be held at Pierson Park in Tarrytown and the RiverWalk/Horans Landing Park in Sleepy Hollow. The fireworks will be shot off from the former GM site beginning at dusk on the 4th.
Irvington drivers should note that the streets closest to the parks will be closed off to traffic as more people come to watch the fireworks.
