Irvington Schools Welcome New Superintendent

IRVINGTON, N.Y. – Newly appointed Irvington Superintendent Kristopher Harrison said he's confident that he can work with other school officials to celebrate achievement and overcome any obstacles that may arise.

“To my colleagues, the teachers, the educational leaders, staff: I'm proud to be able to work alongside you,” Harrison said. “To our parents and community, I look forward to hearing what it is that you desire for your children. We know that tonight our relationship is just beginning, but in this beginning we collaborate on a mission. A mission that will ensure our schools will meet the needs of every child every day.”

Irvington school officials celebrated Harrison's appointment Thursday night at the Irvington Public Library during a special board of education meeting featuring food and music from five high school students.

Board members unanimously voted to approve Harrison's contract while praising his qualifications.

School board President John Dawson said he and fellow Board member Jim McCann “made a lot of phone calls” about Harrison.

“‘Fantastic’ is all we heard,” Dawson said. “He is somebody who's going to take our district from where we are now,” not just maintain, “but to drive it even forward. We're looking forward to this man doing wonderful things for the children of this community.”

Other board members praised Harrison's commitment to excellence and the Irvington school district.

“We really believe in you and we know that you believe in the district, so I think it's a really perfect match and we look forward to growing together,” Board member Phil Whitney said.

School Board member Robert Grados said he thought the Irvington community would find that Harrison is excellent and “a leader who's going to lead our district to the next phase of what Irvington is going to be.”

Teachers Association President James Groven welcomed Harrison and said he has tremendous faith in the board to pick a superintendent who fits the needs of the school district.

“We look forward to your leadership as we continue to strive for excellence and maintain the values and culture that makes Irvington a great school district,” Groven said.
