IRVINGTON, N.Y. – Irvington residents can expect higher water and sewer bills after May 31, officials said.

Village officials adopted a 2.9 percent increase in water rates and a 8.5 percent increase in sewer rates in April. Officials say the increase is necessary because of increased rates from New York City, the village's water supplier.

The cost of water is up 10.78 percent for Irvington's allotted consumption and 7.9 percent for excess consumption, officials said.

“Additionally, the increase is needed to maintain the Village’s water supply infrastructure and keep the water and sewer funds financially solvent,” Treasurer Brenda Jeselnik said in a letter. “Prior to 2006, rates were not increased to keep up with water and operational costs resulting in a deficit which at its peak was $1,930,000. With improved efficiencies and water rate increases, the fund is on a path of financial improvement.”
