IRVINGTON, N.Y. — The Village of Irvington is ready for the potential blizzard that is due to arrive overnight Monday into Tuesday.

Mayor Brian Smith has declared a State of Emergency effective 9 p.m. Monday. The order restricts travel on all roads throughout the village.  Only emergency vehicles are permitted to travel starting 9 p.m. Monday and continuing indefinitely.

"With so many serious storms in recent years, our process has become all too familiar," Smith said.

Smith met with the department heads in Irvington Monday morning to ensure that everyone was prepared for the storm and to go over last minute details.

Chains were placed on all of the fire department's apparatus.

Mayor Smith is requesting a liaison from Con Edison for the village to speed power restoration if needed. All of the village's generators have been checked and were also recently serviced.

"We are working on plans to provide sheltering - the plan has to be flexible depending on where power is lost or if areas become inaccessible due to downed wires or trees," said Smith.

Smith has arranged to have arborists on call so they can clear trees as soon as possible, if that becomes necessary. Irvington will also have Village Hall available as a shelter if the need arises.

"We have secured several hotel rooms for DPW, police and management so they can remain in the area but be rested, especially if the response extends for several days," Smith said.

Irvington has cancelled the Board of Trustee and Architecture Review Board meetings for Monday night. All Recreation Department activities have been canceled after noon Monday. Village Hall and Recreation offices will be closed at 3 p.m. Monday and will be closed on Tuesday.

The Irvington Public Library closed at noon Monday and will be closed on Tuesday.

"The bottom line is we are preparing for a multi-day severe weather event and we believe we are prepared as possible," said Smith. "We are fortunate to have very experienced department heads, employees and volunteers that have gotten us through many storms in the past.

"We request that residents stay off the roads so the DPW crews can clear them and emergency services can respond as needed."
