IRVINGTON, N.Y. Westchester residents gathered in large groups along the Hudson River Friday morning to watch the space shuttle Enterprise journey to its new home in New York City.
Enterprise, mounted atop its 747 carrier aircraft, flew from New York City to just south of the Tappan Zee Bridge before turning around.
The shuttle's carrier plane landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport. NASA officials said the shuttle prototype will be demated from its carrier in the next few weeks and then placed on a barge on the Hudson River. The barge will carry Enterprise to its new home at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.
Enterprise will be displayed to the public starting this summer at the museum. It was NASA's first, prototype orbiter and never traveled to space. Enterprise was rolled out in 1976 and was used for test flights in the atmosphere. NASA's entire space shuttle fleet has been retired and is moving to museums across the country.
