At ceremonies Monday, July 13, marking its 40th anniversary, the flagship center was formally dubbed the “Jeannette J. Phillips Health Center,” HRHCare officials said.

Phillips, who was the organization’s first board member, was present to help cut the ribbon at the dedication, according to a press release. The other founders were the late Mary Wood, Pearl Woods and Willie Mae Jackson.

She was joined by Congresswoman Nita Lowey, D-Westchester/Rockland, Westchester County Legislator Catherine Borgia, Peekskill Mayor Frank Catalina, health pioneer Dr. Jack Geiger, and HRHCare executives and staff.

A lack of health care services in the early 1970s, spurred the four women to establish the Peekskill Ambulatory Health Care Center, according to a press release.

Opened in 1975, it has grown into one of the largest community health systems in New York, HRHCare said in a press release. It employs 800 people and serves 112,000 patients each year at sites from Ulster and Columbia counties to the eastern end of Long Island according to a press release.

Last year, HRHCare reported 480,000 patient visits in total, according to a press release.

The honoree was praised for being instrumental in promoting both the organization and the cause of affordable health care.

“Rev. Phillips is a true leader here in Westchester, and an inspiration to everyone who seeks to provide access to quality health care,” said Anne Nolon, the organization’s CEO in a press release. “We serve tens of thousands of patients at 30 sites around the region, and none of it would be possible without her work.”
