Rebello, 21, was killed in a police standoff after Dalton Smith, 30, forced his way into her home located a block from campus.

“Because the safety of our students and community members is our highest priority, it is crucial that we work collaboratively with the Police Departments to enhance safety in our area,” Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz said in a statement. “Be assured that our conversations are ongoing and our voice will be heard. Hofstra’s administrators have already had many conversations with students, faculty, parents and members of the community, many of whom have offered suggestions for improvement.”
