TARRYTOWN, N.Y. Grants totaling $200,000 and village funds will begin improvements on the Tarrytown Lakes trail system, which supporters hope will eventually connect Sleepy Hollow High School with the EF school.
Members of the Tarrytown Lakes Committee discussed their long-term plans for the trail system during two recent Tarrytown Board of Trustees meetings.
The entire project is about access to the lake, Steve Yarabek said. It's been really impressive to me as I've been working on the project as to how many students at both the Sleepy Hollow schools and the EF students really use and enjoy this facility as well as varies citizens walking dogs and walking children.
A $10,000 Greenway grant and a $100,000 grant from the New York Department of State are funding the initial phase of the improvement project. Tarrytown was obligated to match the department of state's $100,000 with its own funds.
Lakes Committee officials said they first want to improve the main trail, which was once a railroad. The trail winds from the ice shack on Neperan Road, behind Marymount Convent and to the existing soccer fields near the Wilson Park subdivision.
We're calling it a trail because the intent is not to restore it as a railroad trail in the traditional sense of the word, Yarabek said. Change has occurred on the trail so we're going to honor the variety of topography and vegetation that's on the trail.
Yarabek said future phases of the project will include improvements to the soccer field, including a picnic pavilion, and fixing up other parts of the trail-way system. Yarabek also hopes to include historical signage on the trails that details the history of the village and the railroad that once ran through that part of town.
Tarrytown is in the process of putting out the project to bid.
