TARRYTOWN, N.Y. Lyndhurst and Jazz Forum Arts have teamed up once again for the annual Sunset Jazz outdoor concert series.
Free concerts will take place each Thursday in August on the grounds of Lyndhurst. This year's series will feature Manuel Valera and the New Cuban Express, the Hastings Jazz Collective, the Akiko Tsuruga Quartet and the Allan Harris Band.
The Lyndhurst grounds will open at 5 p.m. each Thursday, with music beginning at 6:30 p.m. Jazz lovers are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets to sit on during the concert. Parking is $10. Concert-goers can bring their own or purchase a picnic on site.
All concerts will be held on the west lawn, which overlooks the Hudson River. The rain venue is the Carriage House courtyard tent.
New York City-based Manuel Valera is a pianist, bandleader, composer and arranger of contemporary modern jazz. Valera blends music from Cuba, Puerto Rico and Brazil, as well as other jazz styles, according to his website. Valera received the 2006 New Works Commission award and the 2005 ASCAP Young Composers Award.
The Hastings Jazz Collective is a collaboration of Rivertown artists: director, composer and pianist David Janeway, guitarist Jay Azzolina, saxophonist and flautist Tim Armacost, bassist Harvie S and drummer Ron Vincent. The group was formed in 2008.
Akiko Tsuruga is a jazz organist whose third album has reached No. 7 on the national jazz radio chart. Tsuruga, a native of Osaka, Japan, is touring the United States with her own quartet, as well as the Lou Donaldson Quartet.
New York City-based Allan Harris is a singer, songwriter and guitarist whose musical style crosses from jazz to blues to rock. He has been recognized with a New York Nightlife Award for Outstanding Jazz Vocalist three times.
