First Lady Michelle Obama Visits Westchester's Stone Barns

POCANTICO HILLS, N.Y. – First Lady Michelle Obama held an event in Pocantico Hills at Blue Hill at Stone Barns Sunday. The campaign fundraising brunch drew about 120 guests as Obama discussed politics, health and family.

Traffic was backed up along Bedford Road before the event began at 11 a.m. as officials put the area under strict security. Tickets for the reception started at $1,500 per person and guests included actress Vanessa Williams, according to a report released after the event.

Obama spoke at the brunch and began by thanking Dan Barber, owner and chef at Blue Hill , according to a transcript of the speech released after the event. Barber is also a member of President Barack Obama’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition.

The First Lady told the guests Barber visited her and the president in Chicago during the last presidential campaign and prepared vegetables that were “so fresh and so delicious and so simply created,” according to the transcript. The First Lady also thanked grassroots volunteers and highlighted middle-class values and affordable education, relating her childhood to the average American.

“We’re doing this because we want all our children to have good schools – the kind of schools that push them, and inspire them, and prepare them for opportunities in the future,” the First Lady said in the transcript.

The rest of Obama’s speech focused on ensuring seniors can retire with dignity, providing security for the middle-class, health care and student loans, according to the transcript.

The First Lady urged supporters to work hard as part of her husband’s campaign, emphasizing the progress he has made while in office and outlining what is at stake in the upcoming election, according to the transcript.

This was the First Lady’s second visit to Stone Barn – she toured the establishment Sept. 24, 2010.
