Duracell Cleanup Gets Under Way In Sleepy Hollow

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Crews have broken ground to clean up the area near the former Duracell battery plant in Sleepy Hollow.

“Our goal is to minimize disruption for the neighborhood while expeditiously completing the work,” Duracell Communications Director Win Sakdinan said.

Remediation efforts began last week, with crews starting the first stage near the municipal parking lot on Andrews Lane. Work will continue throughout the area until mid to late October, Sakdinan said. Cleanup efforts will break for the winter and resume in mid-April.

Topsoil will be removed and replaced with clean soil at about 80 homes near the former plant site. A study of 146 properties near the former plant found elevated levels of mercury and lead. This is the second remediation project for the former battery plant site.

Village officials have been working to streamline the permit process so that crews can get to work sooner. The project had been scheduled to start in May, but officials first had to get approval for individual cleanup sites from the village.

Sakdinan said Duracell and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation are working together to ensure that cleanup objectives are met and to monitor air quality. Crews have installed several air-quality monitors around their work site.
