YONKERS, N.Y. -- The 25 dead cats found hanging in bags on a tree in Yonkers on Thursday are believed to have been deliberately killed by trauma to the head, the SPCA of Westchester announced Friday afternoon.
Three of the cats were brought to a veterinary hospital for necropsies and the cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to the head, according to the SPCA. It is believed that all of the cats suffered the same death.
The cats were found at 14 Overlook Terrace Thursday morning by Yonkers Department of Public Works employees performing a routine clean-up of the area.
The cats were in different stages of decomposition, and it is possible they had been put in the bags at different times, said Yonkers Police Lt. Patrick McCormack,
The SPCA added that additional items were removed from the scene for further analysis.
“Both the SPCA of Westchester and the Yonkers Police Department are highly motivated to find those who are responsible for this heinous act," said Ernie Lungaro, director of the SPCA’s HLE Unit. "The investigation continues as we follow up leads and conduct interviews."
The SPCA will continue to investigate what happened to the cats, said Shannon Laukhuf, executive director of the SPCA.
“All of us at the SPCA of Westchester are deeply appalled by this depraved act of animal cruelty,” she said. “I want to assure the public that we will use every resource available to us to bring those responsible to swift justice.”
This is not the first incident of dead cats found in Yonkers recently. In May 2013, a $1,000 reward was offered by the Animal Defenders Of Westchester for information on a suspected cat killer in northeast Yonkers.
Anyone with information about the cats is asked to call the Yonkers Police Department detectives' division at 914-377-7724.
