The hall was condemned Wednesday (two days ago) following an inspection by a village.There were no injuries when the collapse occurred, according to a report by lohud.com.
Dobbs Ferry police and firefighters responded to a call Friday evening. Police closed Palisade Street temporarily Friday night to respond to the collapse.
Village Building Inspector Ed Manley had ordered the gas shut down on Thursday after the building was deemed unsafe. The Legion requested an inspection because of a separation between a ceiling and a wall.
The American Legion Post 1048 made an announcement on its Facebook page late Friday.
"The building collapsed, but the fellowship and friendships of the American Legion veterans remain strong," the post read.
Response from the community was immediate as residents began supporting a rebuilding project with American Legion 1048 Rebuild.
"Such a sad night for the town," said Josh Berman, who took of a photo of the Legion Post following the collapse. "We have a lot of members of that particular post that are heart broken. We have also created a donation page to rebuild if you wouldn't mind adding it."
John Tacij, owner of Dobbs Ferry Pizza and a resident of the village posted on Facebook.
"My heart goes out to my fellow residents in Dobbs Ferry," Tacji wrote. "Tonight we lost the American Legion 1048 to a collapse. The building is lost but not what it stood for. We will rebuild."
Manley said the building would be razed as soon as possible.
