The Red Cross was on the scene immediately and shelter was established at Peekskill Middle School. Carolyn Sherwin of the Red Cross said more than 20 families registered with them.

Sherwin said victims of the families ranged from a 5-week old infant to people in their 50s.

"Peekskill is strong," Sherwin said. "We've had volunteers playing with kids and making sure people get meals served."

The Red Cross is working with other community agencies and the displaced families to provide them the assistance they need.

Sherwin said Father John Higgins from Assumption Church was at the middle school all day providing support.

"The ongoing response has been phenomenal," Sherwin said. "We are beginning the road to recovery."

Assumption Church is accepting monetary donations and gift cards for the victims.

Checks may be made payable to “Assumption Church” and dropped off at or mailed to Assumption Rectory  at 131 Union Ave. during business hours. Assumption Church is not accepting donations of clothing or food.

Main Street Grill was offering a free pasta dinner to families affected by the fire.

A GoFundMe page was set up by Pablo Antunez to help victims of the fire.
