Chamber Music Fills High School's Kusel Auditorium

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Sleepy Hollow High School's Kusel Auditorium plays hosts to numerous student activites and concerts for the Union Free School District of the Tarrytowns. The auditorium is also home to the Friends of Music Concerts' chamber music concert series.

The non-profit organization first began as a group of friends in 1953. Croton-on-Hudson City Planner George M. Raymond persuaded people to raise money to start a concert series in Croton.

The first concert was held in the Van Cortlandt School in Croton, where the Juilliard String Quartet performed Mozart, Debussy and Beethoven to an audience of 450.

The Friends of Music Concerts recently announced performers for its 58th season.

Performances for the series begin at 8 p.m. Ticket availability information can be found by calling 914-861-5080 or at www.friendsofmusicconcerts.org.

Subscriptions are $120 for adults, $60 for students. Individual concerts are $30 for adults, $15 for students.

Emerson String Quartet – October 1

The Emerson String Quartet will open the concert season on Saturday with a selection of works by Beethoven, Mozart and Shostakovich. Quartet members violinists Eugene Drucker and Philip Setzer, cellist David Finckel and violist Lawrence Dutton have been given numerous awards, including nine Grammy Awards, for their music.

This will be the Quartet's 12th appearance with the Friends of Music Concerts.

Trio con Brio Copenhagen – October 22

Haydn, Ravel and Tchaikovsky will rule the day as Trio con Brio makes its appearance on stage at Sleepy Hollow High School.

Trio con Brio consists of pianist Jens Elvekjaer, violinist Soo-Jin Hong and cellist Soo-Kyung Hong.

Gramaphone magazine described the trio as “a superb and greatly gifted chamber group.” The trio has been awarded the 2005 Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Award.

Charlie Albright – November 12

“Keyboard wizard” Charlie Albright will entertain concert-goers in November.

Albright has been awarded the Friends of Music Concerts' Performance Award, along with the 2010 Gilmore Young Artists Award and 2009 Young Concert Artist Award.

Carducci String Quartet – April 14

London-based Carducci String Quartet will perform Mozart, Ravel, Piazzolla and Bartok in April.

The group has taught master classes throughout Westchester public schools as part of the Friends of Music Partnerships in Education program.

The quartet consists of violinist Matthew Denton, violinist Michelle Fleming, violist Eoin Schmidt-Martin and cellist Emma Denton.

Zuill Bailey with Nevah Perlman – April 28

Cellist Zuill Bailey will perform with pianist Nevah Perlman on April 28.

Julliard Baroque Ensemble – May 12

The famed school will present an all-Bach program from faculty as part of an outgrowth of its newest graduate program in Historical Performance.

Musicians include : violinists Monica Huggett, Robert Mealy, and Cynthia Roberts; cellist Phoebe Carrai; double bassists Robert Nairn; flutist Sandra Miller; Oboeist Gonzalo Ruiz; bassoonist Dominic Teresi and harpsichordist Kenneth Weiss.
