The man, who was staying at the Volunteers of America homeless shelter on the Grassland Reservation in Valhalla, was found around 4 a.m. after leaving the facility, according to Kieran O'Leary, spokesman for the Westchester County Police.
The unidentified man was found around 4 a.m. in a residential area behind a home on Taylor Street in Greenburgh, following a search that lasted more than six hours, O'Leary said.
Shelter officials say the man, who was acting erratically, left the facility around 4 a.m., wearing pajama bottoms, a T-shirt, and no shoes. They immediately contacted police who sent out crews, including K-9 units, O'Leary said.
"The K-9 officer said it was 10 degrees when he arrived on site to search, so we believe weather could be a factor in his death," O'Leary said. "A person can suffer hypothermia quite quickly in those temperatures."
Units, including a helicopter after daylight, searched the area, which includes the jail and a hospital for more than six hours to locate the missing man, he added.
An investigation is ongoing and pending the medical examiner’s report,
