Update: The Catskill Aqueduct shutdown has been rescheduled to Tuesday, June 19, and Thursday, June 21. Shutdowns will begin at 4 p.m. and end at 8 a.m. the next day.
SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. Sleepy Hollow officials are encouraging residents to conserve water Tuesday night and Thursday night during planned shutdowns of the Catskill Aqueduct.
Any conservation that can be done would be appreciated, said Richard Gross, general foreman of the village Department of Public Works.
Sleepy Hollow buys its water from the New York City water system and pumps it from the Catskill Aqueduct. Gross said the city was planning to shut down the aqueduct to make tie-ins to a connecting plant. The shutdown will stop the flow of water into the village's storage tank.
The shutdown is planned to take place for 16 hours, from 4 p.m. Tuesday to 8 a.m. Wednesday. Gross noted another 16-hour shutdown is planned for Thursday beginning at 4 p.m.
Hopefully the permanent tie-in will be up and running after the first and second shutdowns, Gross said.
Residents may see brown water, Gross noted, but it's not harmful. Gross also requests residents abstain from using their lawn sprinklers during the shutdown.
If they have to use their sprinklers, use them from midnight to 1 a.m. in the morning when there's very low usage in the system, Gross said.
