Lillis is a former teacher, teaching mathematics for seven years after graduating college. Having an interest in public education, he jumped at the chance to run for the school board.

The school board is focused on supporting Christopher Bursari, who was recently named the new superintendent.

"We are making sure he has everything he needs to succeed in his job," Lillis said.

The school board is also planning its annual budget, which residents will vote on in May. One of the challenges in most districts in New York is how to manage within the state-mandated tax levy cap legislation that passed a few years ago, said Lillis.

"So far we've been able to do it," Lillis said. One of the things I try to bring to the conversation is we need sustainability, for the next 20 or 30 years for our kids. We need to do things we can commit to now that we have confidence can withstand other financial issues that will creep up in the future."
