Tarrytown Scarecrows Come Alive At Patriots Park

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Tarrytown teen Thea Dente admits she let someone else stuff her scarecrow on Saturday.

“I'm kind of allergic to hay, so I just put the [clothes] on,” she said, pointing to her finished scarecrow.

Dente's scarecrow, a tribute to the Adam Sandler film “Jack and Jill,” was christened Pagogo after Sandler's character. A friend's scarecrow completes the duo and is named Pokey.

Hay flew around Patriot's Park on Saturday as the Tarrytown Recreation Department hosted its annual scarecrow-making event. Village officials provided wooden crosses, straw and pillowcases while residents brought their own clothes.

Scarecrows will be displayed along Main Street and Route 9 throughout October. Some scarecrow-makers decided to come up with a theme. Others just brought old clothes.

Tarrytown residents Jim and Dancy Balestrieri, along with kids Ian, Lucia and Vivian, decided their scarecrow would be “the Brooks Brothers scarecrow” and joked it was an “Occupy Scarecrow effigy.”

The Balestieris have been making scarecrows for several years. Dancy noted they had come up with a new strategy this year so that their creation didn't droop as in years' past.

“We are suspending him this year from the arms and the cross,” she said. “We're hoping we have enough stuff to pull this off.”

The annual village tradition is always a hit with the kids, they said.

“They love it,” Jim said.
