Tarrytown Baseball Coach William Young Dies at 91

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. - William Arthur Young, of Tarrytown, died March 5 at the age of 91.

A resident of Tarrytown since 1962, he coached Dad's Club, Babe Ruth and American Legion baseball in town throughout the years.

He was born May 25, 1920, in Manhattan to William and Margaret Young. After attending Fordham Preparatory School, he graduated from St. John's University where he played baseball for legendary baseball coach Joe Lapchick.

Young then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. He served in the Pacific during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars for valor for his service on New Britain, Peleliu and Okinawa.

After the war, he went to work for F.W. Woolworth Company until his retirement in 1988. In 1942, Young married the former Eileen M. Hearn in Yonkers and they later moved to Tarrytown, where five of his six children became graduates of Sleepy Hollow High School. A longtime member of the Knollwood Country Club and the Lyceum Club, Young enjoyed golf and bowling.

Surviving are his sons, Wayne, Kevin, Glenn and Gary; his daughter, Karen. He was predeceased by his wife Eileen in 2006; his son, Vietnam War veteran and U.S. Marine officer, Bill, in 2004; and his sister Marion Jaeger in 2011.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Dwyer & Vanderbilt Funeral Home in Tarrytown. There will be a service at 10 a.m. Friday at Gate of Heaven Cemetery Chapel.
