SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. -- Gregory Camp is the Chief of Police of the Sleepy Hollow Police Department. He submitted this letter a few days after two men were shot outside a Sleepy Hollow bar.
Recently there have been several acts of violence occurring in or around the bars in our village, the most recent resulting in a shooting. Although we believe these incidents are isolated, unrelated events, many of you have voiced your thoughts and concerns, so I would like to reassure the resident of this village that your police department and village officials are committed to keeping you safe and are taking proactive measures to prevent future occurrences.
As Chief of Police, I am taking various steps focused on village bars during the evening hours, as well as engaging my officers in other enforcement initiatives designed to prevent future problems. Further, I am working with other village department heads and your elected officials to find ways to improve safety measures in our commercial district and to mitigate circumstances that could otherwise enable criminal activity. As always, any of your village officials are open to receiving input from the public.
Your police department's mission is to enhance the quality of life within our village--to work with the public, and guided by the principles of the Constitutions of the United States and the State of New York, to enforce the law, preserve the peace, reduce the fear of crime and provide a safe environment for our citizens while respecting the rights and dignity of all persons. This is what we have done and will continue to do with the support of your village officials.
