The Tarrytown-based Westchester Circus Arts held an open house at the Tarrytown Community Opportunity Center, letting kids and teens try out circus acts such as tightrope walking, aerial silks and more.

Founder Hilary Sweeney said the open house had drawn lots of families Saturday.

“I was surprised to see so many people,” she said. “It's good.”

Westchester Circus Arts opened at the Tarrytown COC in September. It is a year-round program, offering classes for kids, teens and adults. Saturday's open house was a preview of the program's summer camp.

Sweeney says the circus arts are great for kids because it's a non-competitive activity that can tailored to each child's strengths.

“It works well with bringing out the best in each child,” she said. “It's not a one-size fits all model. We find what each child is good at and bring it out.”
