TARRYTOWN, N.Y. Several Tarrytown businesses let children draw all over their store windows Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the Halloween season.
The annual window-painting tradition let second- through fifth-graders showcase their artistic talents and spooky imaginations.
We don't judge them and there is no prize, but it's a lot of fun and helps decorate the town, said Mary Lou Gladstone, president of the Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow Arts Council.
About 180 children participated in the window painting, Gladstone said. The group had 65 windows available by the start of the festivities and expected several Girl Scout troops and an after-school art class to stop by.
Businesses signed up with the Sleepy Hollow-Tarrytown Chamber of Commerce to have their windows sectioned off for the kids. Organizers used window tape to cordon off spaces and then let eager kids fill them in with window markers. Parents were also on hand to supervise the painting and offer guidance.
The Halloween art has been a big hit with local businesses during its 10-year run because it has people coming and going to their storefronts like an art gallery, said John Sardy, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce.
They love it, he said. They look forward to it every year.
