A Class of 2005 high school graduate, Lowy studied music and linguistics at Harvard University. He attended graduate school at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music, where he auditioned for the position of principal clarinetist in the North Carolina Symphony. He won the audition at the at 22 years old.
Lowy's love of music was evident early on. While he was a student at Hastings High School, he attended the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division.
“I remember when Andrew couldn’t decide between becoming a doctor or playing the clarinet,” said Ken Jernigan, his orchestra and band teacher from Hastings High School. “Everybody liked him. He never felt that he was so good he didn’t have to practice hard. He was a wonderful person, easy to work with, and humble. I am not surprised by his accomplishments in music at such a young age.”
In addition to his musical abilities, Lowy was valedictorian of his class at Harvard and captain of the varsity soccer team.
