SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. -- Fernando Monteiro, former greens attendant for Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, died March 22 at the age of 77.
Born in Portugal on July 2, 1934, he was the son of Serafim and Ana Monteiro. A veteran of the Portuguese Army, Monteiro married Adelaide R. Da Purificacao on May 25, 1957 in Portugal. The couple later settled in Tarrytown where they raised their family.
Monteiro was a greens attendant at the cemetery for many years before retiring. Proud of his Portuguese heritage, he was an active member of the Portuguese American Cultural Center. He played the bandolin in church at the Portuguese mass as well as the banjo for the Folklore Group.
He is survived by his wife Adelaide, his children Abel Monteiro of Ohio, Maria Jorge of Tarrytown, Helena Caronia of Yorktown Heights, Filipe Monteiro of Dobbs Ferry and Cristina Gallo of Brewster, N.Y. and 11 grandchildren. Monteiro is also survived by two brothers and a sister, all in Portugal.
Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Saturday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral mass will start at 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Teresa of Avila Church in Tarrytown with interment following in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
