Deputy Chief of Tarrytown FD, McCarthy Dies at 50

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. - Joseph F. McCarthy, Jr., a deputy chief of Hope Hose Company of the Tarrytown Fire Department, died suddenly on Nov. 5. He was 50.

A lifelong active member of Hope Hose, he served as Fire Chief from 2002 to 2005 and served on the Board of Wardens.

McCarthy was born in North Tarrytown on July 3, 1961, the son of Joseph F. and Mary Lobasso McCarthy. He graduated from Sleepy Hollow High School in 1979. On May 2, 1987, he married Barbara Kirchoff in St. Teresa of Avila Church. 

He was a member of the Tarrytown Chiefs Association and the Westchester County Parade Judges Association, as well as the Rescue Hose Company of the Sleepy Hollow Fire Department. McCarthy was also owner of Handy Mac's Home Improvements in Tarrytown.

Eucharistic Minister and Usher at Transfiguration Church, McCarthy was known as a loving and honorable man and was also said to possess a "wicked" sense of humor. His joys included fishing and spending time in the outdoors.

McCarthy is survived by his wife Barbara, his mother Mary of Sleepy Hollow, his sisters Kathleen (John) Hardiman of Bethel, Conn. and Clarice (Blaine Taft) Pollack of Tarrytown.

The funeral mass will take place at Transfiguration Church on Thursday at 10 a.m. Funeral arrangements by Coffey Funeral Home.
