Westchester Hosts Family-Friendly Chinese New Year Celebrations

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- With Valentine's Day, Presidents Day and the upcoming Oscars, it's easy to forget there's something else to celebrate this month: Chinese New Year.

The Year of the Ram officially begins on Thursday, Feb. 19. Here are ways to celebrate over the coming weeks.

Feb. 28, Chinese New Year Celebration, Pelham Arts Center, Pelham: A host of family-friendly activities commemorate the new year. Choose from a paper craft workshop (from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.), or sit ringside when members of Kwan’s Kung Fu, a group from Peekskill, will perform a traditional Lion Dance, believed in Chinese culture to scare away evil spirits and to bring good luck. RSVP to reserve a spot; the event is free. Feb. 28, Scarsdale Public Library, Scarsdale: The Scarsdale Public Library. Come between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. for dance performances, traditional costumes, crafts, a taste of Chinese food, and more. Registration not required. Information: 54 Olmsted Road, 914-722-1300, www.scarsdalelibrary.org/.

March 1, Arts Westchester, White Plains: Arts Westchester, in partnership with the Organization of Chinese Americans of Westchester & Hudson Valley, is featuring a host of visual-arts displays from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. including the East River Ensemble silk and bamboo instrumental music, musicians Isabel Peng and Ariane Kuo, Kwan’s Kung Fu Lion Dance Ensemble from Peekskill and more.
