WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - A Westchester County animal shelter is chipping in to do their part to help pets that have been displaced from their families following the hurricane in Texas.

Pet Rescue in Larchmont has been busy accepting donations and sending food and other pet necessities to Houston following the devastation Tropical Storm Harvey left in its wake.

According to officials at Pet Rescue, they are now getting ready to welcome newcomers to the area and are in need of families to help foster cats and dogs that lost their homes in the storm.

“By now, you've seen and heard the devastating news about Hurricane Harvey pummeling Texas with 25 inches of rain. And more rain is expected - another 25 inches in some areas,” they posted. “The floods have left eight people dead, and thousands homeless and flocking to make-shift shelters. Experts are predicting that the damage will exceed that of Hurricane Katrina.”

Officials said that volunteers in Texas are “desperately trying to assist the Montgomery County Animal Control in their efforts to rescue and save the animals of Montgomery County, which is just north of Houston, the area worst hit.”

A temporary shelter has been set up for rescued animals in the area, but space is filling up quickly and many pets are expected to be in need of foster care.

“Pet Rescue has committed to pulling 30 to 35 animals to safety in the next 10 days, or as soon as transport can be organized. We would also like to send pet food and supplies to the impacted area since the weeks to come will require food, crates, toys and bedding. Any assistance you can provide today will directly help in rescuing these needy animals in Texas.”

Anyone interested in donating to the cause can do so online. Families interested in fostering a rescue animal stranded following the storm can do so here.
