County Executive Rob Astorino, along with local restauranteurs and Valley Table staff congregated at the newly opened RiverMarket Bar & Kitchen in Tarrytown.
Astorino remarked in his address that farm-to-table dining is an important part of Westchester's history, and that the county's restaurants are so excellent that residents should not feel the need to travel to New York City for fine dining.
"The Hudson Valley continues to be a destination for superior dining experiences," said the event's founder Janet Crawshaw, "It is a fabulous opportunity to have all the chefs showcase not only their restaurants, but also their fresh, creative dishes."
The restaurant week runs from Nov. 4-17. More than 60 Westchester restaurants will be offering three-course, prix fixe dinners at $29.95, and lunch at $20.95 (not including beverage, tax and tip).
Guests sang "Happy Birthday" to Westchester as Astorino blew the candles out on a cake provided by the restaurant, openly wishing for four more years as county executive.
The real fun came later, when Astorino donned an apron and joined the restaurant's executive chef, John Holzwarth, in the kitchen to make homemade potato gnocchi and bolognese sauce.
Astorino helped Holzwarth prepare the dough and cut the gnocchi while Holzwarth explained the process to a crowd of onlookers.
The two went through the process step-by-step, and sampled the finished product - which proved to be delicious, according to Astorino.
RiverMarket Bar & Kitchen is among the participants of restaurant week this year. It is located at 127 West Main Street.
