Is Your A/C Unit Ready For The Hot Summer Months?

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. -- The National Weather Service is projecting a really hot summer. The experts at A. Borrelli Mechanical in Pleasantville share tips to make sure your air conditioning system runs efficiently all summer long. When your A/C unit is serviced before the summer begins, you will save energy and money throughout the season. Maintenance checks help you go a little easier on the environment because your A/Cs will use less energy overall.

"The more consistently you maintain your units, the longer the equipment will last,” said Borrelli.

“We get the units ready for the summer by blowing out the lines, replacing filters and checking the refrigerant, thermostat, belts and safety controls,” said Al Borrelli, President of A. Borrelli Mechanical. “If you have a window unit, you should clean the filter every month during the season by running it under lukewarm water.” This will also cut down on allergens in your home but make sure the filter has dried completely before replacing it!

Most people do not realize that their air conditioning unit needs sufficient breathing room to function properly – 3-5 feet on at least two sides is ideal. Planting bushes or shrubs too close to your A/Cs will force the unit to work harder, sending your electric bill skyrocketing!

Avoid running the dishwasher or the washing machine during the hottest times of the day to cut down on excess heat. Changing out your incandescent bulbs for compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) or LEDs can also help, as they run cooler and consume less energy. Be sure to draw the blinds during the day to prevent sunlight from heating the rooms in your home.

“When searching for a reputable HVAC business, start with the Better Business Bureau," said Borrelli.
