Did you file? If not, go HERE to find your closest post office and its hours.

If your return is postmarked by April 18th, the IRS considers it filed on time.

Some mailing tips:

  • Be sure to use sufficient postage. Double-check your envelope. Does it weigh more than one ounce? Tax returns without enough postage will be returned.
  • Write clearly. Print labels on your computer or neatly write both the destination and return addresses.
  • Get a return receipt. Get an electronic or physical delivery record showing who signed for your tax return.
  • Avoid the post office rush. Mail your return in a collection box that has a pick up time before the deadline. The post office suggests mailing early in the day at any station, branch or collection box. Double-check the pick-up schedule; to ensure getting the April 18th postmark, deposit returns before the last scheduled pick-up time.
Tax returns are typically due on April 15th, but the deadline was bumped to April 18 because of Washington, D.C.’s, observance of Emancipation Day. Emancipation Day marks President Abraham Lincoln’s signing of the District of Columbia Emancipation Act on April 16, 1862. The legislation ended slavery in Washington and freed more than 3,000 people.

The holiday actually fell on Saturday, April 16 but was observed a day earlier, pushing Tax Day to the next business day, which is today.
