A hernia is a hole in the abdominal wall and occurs when an organ or a piece of tissue protrudes through the muscle. Anything that causes an increase in pressure in the abdomen can cause a hernia, including lifting heavy objects or constant coughing or sneezing. "Treating a hernia is much like a leaky roof, you want to fix the hole when it's small so it doesn't get bigger and cause more damage to your house," said Dr. Har Chi Lau, a surgeon at Hudson Valley Surgical Group.

While the fear of going under the knife may scare some people from treating their hernia, the procedure has become much safer over the past few years. "In the old days, hernia surgery was done with a knife that would be about six to eight inches long, the recovery time would be four to six weeks and patients would be in excruciating pain," said Lau. "With the advancement in today's technology, we have developed a technique which includes small incisions, with very little pain and can get patients back to their normal lives in two weeks."

HVSG uses an advanced procedure called Minimally Invasive Surgery, helping patients recover faster and feel less pain than traditional, open surgery. The procedure allows patients to go home within hours of the surgery and begin the transition back to their normal lives.

The surgeons at HVSG have extensive experience in diagnosing and treating a wide range of hernia types and will recommend the best approach to surgery. As a team, the group has completed over 10,000 hernia surgeries in the past 30 years. "We have the technology and experience to make hernia surgery as painless and effective as possible," said Lau.
