Tarrytown Music Hall To Screen 'Cages of Shame'

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – The plight of endangered moon bears will be outlined in a one-time documentary screening at the Tarrytown Music Hall on Tuesday night.

The Music Hall, along with the non-profit Animals Asia, will present “Cages of Shame” at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for seniors and students. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Animals Asia.

Filmmaker Martin Guiness said he was inspired to create the documentary after learning about bear bile farming. “Cages of Shame” recounts Animals Asia's rescue of 10 bears from a farm in China and will be followed by a question-and-answer session with Animals Asia communications manager Maya Gottfried.

“When I first heard about bear farms I could hardly believe that humans could treat thousands of these wonderful animals in this way,” he said in a press release. “I knew straight away that I had to try and make a film to draw the world’s attention to the plight of the bears.”

The film begins with the shutdown of the last bear farm in the Shandong province of China and showcases Animals Asia's efforts to move 10 bears more than 1,500 miles to a bear sanctuary after they had been living in cages so that farmers could collect their bile, which is used in traditional Asian medicine.

The Humane Society has awarded the documentary its 2011 ACE Documentary Film Grant. The film also was selected by a panel of professionals from Animal Planet, HBO and the Documentary Channel.
