IRVINGTON, N.Y. – Members of the Scleroderma Foundation's Tri-State Chapter will be hosting the organization’s first major event in Westchester County in Irvington on Sunday.

The “Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma Westchester County” inaugural walk will be held at Irvington High School, according to a press release.

Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease that can significantly harm the skin and major organs, according to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases.

“The Westchester County walk provides a central meeting place for many in the Lower Hudson Valley who are impacted by scleroderma,” Jay Peak, executive director of the Scleroderma Foundation's Tri-State Chapter, said in a press release.

“While the disease has no cure, caring health care professionals along specialized research and treatment centers at Yale University and the Hospital for Special Surgery are vital to helping patients endure the ups and downs of scleroderma and associated conditions.”

Approximately 30,000 people in the tristate area suffer from scleroderma, which in some cases can be fatal, Peak added.

Though pre-registration for the Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma Westchester walk is encouraged, on-site registrations will be accepted from people at least 16 years old.

Registration and check-in will begin at 9 a.m., with the walk scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m.

The track will be one-quarter mile.

Awards will be given to the individuals and teams that raise the most money. Everyone who pre-registers will receive a T-shirt.

Food and raffles will also be part of the event.

Pre-event registration is free for children under 5 years old, $5 for children ages 5 to 15, and $20 for anyone 16 or over.

On-site registration will be $25.

Irvington High School is at 40 N. Broadway, Irvington.
