A new MRI facility now occupies the space that was previously the hospital’s main lobby.

Phelps invites the public to attend an open house for the newly completed MRI Center on Monday, Nov. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Visitors will have an opportunity to see the new MRI - a Siemens 1.5 Tesla MAGNETOM Aera Open Bore MRI system.

The new MRI provides advanced clinical applications, including the ability to screen for breast cancer and tools for evaluating other oncological conditions.

It has a wide diameter that gives patients a feeling of spaciousness and is short enough to allow a person's head to remain outside of the magnet during many exams.

Besides being faster, quieter and more comfortable than traditional MRI scanners, the system features custom mood lighting to reduce anxiety and patients are able to listen to music of their choice.

Total cost of the new facility was $4.9 million, including construction and technology.

Phelps staff will be on hand at the open house to answer any questions.

Phelps Hospital, part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, is a full-service 238-bed acute care community hospital.
