SAVE THE DATE--MOTORCYCLE SAFETY EVENT

SUNDAY APRIL 30 AT DANNON PARKING LOT FROM NOON TO 4 PM

This letter is being written to invite motorcyclists to an important event being sponsored by the Town of Greenburgh on Sunday, April 30th from 12 noon to 4 PM (rain date May 7) at the Dannon parking lot across from Greenburgh Town Hall. 100 Hillside Ave, White Plains (town of Greenburgh.

The event: a motorcycle safety event. We want to encourage both motorists and motorcyclists to be aware of their surroundings when sharing the road and to drive their vehicles smart. The police and others will provide motorcyclists with important safety tips. And the remnants of a motorcycle that was involved in a fatality will be displayed to highlight the dangers. the event is being co-sponsored by the Motorcycle Safety School and a number of other motorcycle advocacy groups.

Last year, Police Chief Chris McNerney and I formed a motorcycle safety committee with a group of motorcyclists (Phatboyz) after a motorcyclist lost his life in front of Greenburgh Town Hall around the time a Town Board meeting was breaking up. Shortly after that fatality I read of other motorcycle fatalities around Westchester County. The tragedies happen too frequently.

In the United States there are about 4 to 5 thousand motorcycle fatalities a year. In 2012 about 15% of traffic deaths came from motorcyclists. For motorcyclists - an accident has a greater chance of resulting in death.

It's important that everyone on the road (motorcyclists and motorists) be aware of that fact that a simple distraction could result in the death of a human being. If this event results in the saving of one even one life it will be worth it. Please encourage your friends to join us on the 30th.
