Felony Hearing Set For Mamaroneck Mom Charged With Murder

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Manuela Maria Morgado’s lawyers requested a felony hearing for Oct. 17, which a judge granted in Village of Mamaroneck court Thursday morning. A felony hearing is a preliminary hearing where the prosecution presents the evidence in the case in order to show probable cause.

Morgado, who was not present Thursday, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of her 4-year-old son, Jason “Jake” Reish.

Police said they found Morgado “semi-conscious” Oct. 1 in her Mamaroneck home after a family member called 911 asking that someone check on her. Her son was dead when police arrived.

Published reports say the boy may have been asphyxiated by helium and that the mother attempted to overdose on pills. Morgado was holding the boy in her arms when authorities found them, reports said.

Morgado’s original defense attorney, Max DiFabio, withdrew from the case citing a conflict of interest that he would not explain.

The defendant has been ordered to stay away from the boy’s father, who lives in Briarcliff. In addition to filing an order of protection, prosecutors wanted the have Morgado take a mental health evaluation. The judge has yet to make a ruling.

The felony hearing will also be held in Village of Mamaroneck court.
