Putnam Valley Edges Croton in Mayclim Final

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – A late basket by Carey Berry lifted Putnam Valley to a 32-31 victory over host Croton Saturday in the girls’ championship game of the 31st William Mayclim Basketball Tournament at Croton High School.

Previously unbeaten Croton (4-1) dropped its first game of the season, while Putnam Valley jumped to 5-1.

Bella Addeo’s steal and fast break basket with 41 seconds remaining in the game gave the ho me Tigers a 31-30 lead, but Berry answered with a driving left-hander to give Putnam Valley the lead again at 32-31 with 30 seconds remaining.

Grace Mulligan, who led the host Tigers with 12 points, scored seven consecutive points late in the first half to give Croton a 14-9 lead after the teams had exchanged leads it the second quarter. Mulligan also grabbed nine rebounds as Croton controlled the backboards for most of the game.

Putnam Valley took the lead back in the third quarter with Erin McCrudden nailing a 3-pointer for a 17-16 advantage. McCrudden, who led all scorers with 14 points, and Berry, were named to the All-Tournament team as was Mulligan.

Lauren Lopano had six points, Dani Douglas added five and Melissa Wagner had four points for Croton.

The tournament, which includes competition in boys and girls varsity and junior varsity games, is named for Robert E. Mayclim, known as “The Voice of Croton” and a longtime supporter of Croton sports programs. Mayclim, who passed away in 1986, was President of the Croton-Harmon Booster Club in 1984 and 1985.
