The annual PTSA Dows Lane Halloween Carnival, a rich tradition for many years, brought together high school seniors and the youngest students in the district for fun and camaraderie on Halloween.
High school seniors dressed in costume and staffed the carnival games, helping the Dows Lane students play many of the same games the seniors had played during their own years at Dows Lane.
Kindergarten through third-grade students, wearing costumes and other festive fall fare, enjoyed practicing their skills, winning prizes, and making new friends with the seniors from Irvington High School.
At Main Street School, fourth-grade students participated in various Halloween events in their classrooms. One of the activities, Pumpkin Math, involved weighing a miniature pumpkin, measuring its height and measuring its circumference.
Students collaborated with their peers to use their data to create various bar graphs. As a special treat, students were able to take the pumpkins home with them at the end of the day.
Another activity, "Which Witch is Which" was connected to work in a writers' workshop. Students played a version of “bingo” using homonym word pairs, such as break and brake.
Other activities included a read aloud, creating a pumpkin glyph, constructing the life cycle of a pumpkin and other curriculum related Halloween activities and puzzles. To end the day, each class had a small healthy treat with advice on having a safe and fun rest of the day.
